Let's hit the roads!

My friend and I decided to rent a car on the 16th and 17th december as he wanted to celebrate his ORD. Renting a car was not without much careful considerations since there were high risks and costs involved. We figured that we would still give it a try although we were fresh licence holders. After all, driving is all about accumulating experience. We wanted to be more familiarised with the roads in Singapore and also to hone our driving skills.

We rented a Mazda 3 and we drove to many places. Over the span of 2 days, I travelled through and forth from Pasir Ris to Jurong. I also explored around the east and town areas, trying to remember important road names along the way.
It was quite exhilarating once I got the hands of it, but it was also quite stressful especially when I horlan or when other drivers refused to give way when i wanted to filter into their lanes.

My nightmarish experience didn't occur in the expressways but at Katong. Katong area was packed with traffic during night peak hours and it was hard to navigate around or park. Also, it sux not to know your way around and i felt that driving risks could significantly be reduced if you were familiar with the roads. But thank god i survived it. =D

Overall, it was quite an adventure and my driving confidence had improved tremendously. I felt that the money spent was worth it.

It's time to remember the street directory! =X

Update of race results!!

As mentioned in my previous entry, i took part in two events that were organised as part of the global entrepreneurship month.

First event was called the JA titan held at NUS. Objective of the competition was to run a virtual game company that sought to to thrive, not just to survive. My team of 4, had to make decisions on capital investments, RnD, units productions, units price and marketing that would directly affect our company in order to outwit other competitors running their own virtual companies. Performance of the company was measured by the performance index (PI). Our PI constantly topped the others throughout the quarters and we were excited about winning, as the winning team got to take home a plaque and a coveted 150 Borders book voucher for every team member. As fate had it, we ran out of luck in the last quarter and the 2nd team overtook our PI by a mere few points. It was so damn disappointing as we watched them receiving the vouchers. We were so close to getting them. Yet, we could only sulk and as 1st runner up,we did not get anything by the way. =(

Today's event was called the enterprise race. It was very significant as the winning team got to take home with them a cash reward of $2000! My team was all out to win for this one, after a disappointing performance on the JA titan. We prepared ourselves by running and doing our reseach on companies and present entrepreneurs as hard as we could before the competition . We even went to the extent of going to the starting venue 2 days before the race just to get ourselves familiarised with the surroundings. The race adopted elements from the Amazing Race and it took place in the heart of the CBD area. Participants had to decipher clues and overcome obstacles at a total of 9 stations before they could proceed to the pit stop. The hard work we put in for this one eventually paid off. We came in as the earliest team. However as luck had it again, our total performance points lost out to a RGS girls team (NOT AGAIN!!). Got 2nd again but this time, 2nd place got to walk away with 1k! Woohoo! Besides that, we won the most innovative award at one of the station, and that made our combined revenue 1.3k! Yes! Our real regret for the race was that we didn't get 1st as we lost to the other team in terms of the support they had. The lack of support costed us some valuable points which would have turned the tide of battle :(. None the less, at least we got 2nd and each of us was contented to walk away with a net profit of $305! LOL.

Lesson learnt: Next time must get friends here to support and chear for us.

Peace at last

Hello Blog. It has been quite some time since i last came.

Important milestones in my life. =DDDD

12/11/08 - ORD LOH!! No more regimentations! It's the beginning of a brand new phase of life. I call it the pink IC paradise.

15/11/08 - Officially matriculated into SMU. Can't wait to collect my student card! That means i can now enjoy the student meals at KFC and MAC finally! There is now no longer a need to feign as student and come up with lame excuses when the counter requests to see your student card. O_O

17/11/08 - PASSED MY DRIVING TEST IN MY FIRST ATTEMPT! This wonderful feeling is even more intense than ORDing. OMG, I thought i would fail initially. The most serious mistake during the test was the one when the tester asked me to turn left and i went to turn right. And that really really pissed him off. It pissed him off so bad that he made #%#@ noise non-stop throughout the entire period. SUPER DEMORALISING and i was thinking OMG OMG i gonna failed. Luckily everything in circuit went smoothly and didn't strike kerb or hit pole.. but on the road was like hell. Freakin lots of cars! Well, that wasn't the main point but they just wouldn't want to let me filter into their lanes because everytime i did, they would speed up and HONG at me. Damn irritating! As if the drivers themselves last time were not L or P plates holders before. Maybe they wanted to bastard me upon seeing my dbl L plates. But heng la, in the end i still passed. =DDDDDD

Upcoming and ongoing events. =DDDD

20/11/08 - Friends jio me to attend some biz challenge at NUS. No idea what it is about. Just go. Must go in teams of four. Winning team will get a plaque and $150 dollar book vouchers for every team member.

23/11/08 - Another competition and i think is call the entrepreneurial challenge or something. Basically is like an amazing race within the CBD area. Must go in teams of four again.

I am currently attending jap lessons with my khakis every friday night. It's rather enjoyable to be in their company cause they are seriously funny asses to be with. Friday night has inadvertently turned into a kind of informal gatherings for us.

I ain't looking for a job now although i did source for some a while ago. But none of them turned out to be suitable sadly. I am kinda relishing my freedom now and i admit i realli love it. The money woes will trouble me another day.But right now, i just want to rest.

Boring

My life has pretty much come to a standstill due to heavy commitments in army. Won't pretty much blog on that due to the nature of my work being classified. Let's just say i am attached to a foreign guest in an exchange programme that will span over a month.

Although the days are long, most of the nights in camp are actually quite free. To kill time, i read a book mostly. Occasionally, my buddy will drop by to teach me how to write some hiragana as he is rather proficient in japanese. Other activities i indulge in include watching movies on the PSP or going to the mess to use the computers. It is rather tormenting to be stuck in camp for a week without going home. Imagine a week of prison life! So i always try to find something meaningful to do.

I have begun to receive steroids injections for my hypertrophic scars or keloids monthly. They are supposed to help flatten my scars by breaking down the interior collagen tissues. Hope it helps cause the process is rather excruciating..

Next month, i am going for a operation again to remove all 4 of my wisdom teeth. It is a rather troublesome procedure because i will have to undergo general anesthesia again. Also, the gums will be stitched up after the ops and i will have to return one week later to remove the stitches. One funny thing i heard from my friends is that they will return the teeth immediately to you after the Ops for memorable purposes. Oh well..pretty worthless i guess.

As the saying goes, every suffering has an end! Another 87 days to ORD! Can't wait... :)

Unit Trusts - part 3

Unit Trusts is also known as Mutual funds in the US. They are essentially the same thing.

The principle is the pooling of money from small-time investors into a huge account managed by a manager for investment into the financial market.

4 main types

1) Insurance- Studies had shown that unit trusts from insurance company tend to underperform those offered by financial institution. However, quite a huge sum is invested here due to the psycho effect from our insurance agents. Reason is because these funds usually had a huge amount of admin fees associated with it.. these fees are deducted from your funds to serve your insurance needs. Less pooled funds means less investments which also means less returns in revenue! Hence, a life policy is better than investment linked funds.

2)Banks- Banks selling there own funds eg. UOB and DBS

3)3rd Party Bank- Bank that does not manage any funds but sell funds from other financial institutions..Standard Chartered bank is the biggest 3rd party bank locally.

4)Internet Fund House- Popular now because of its accessiblity. Less admin charges apply because 3rd party transaction is not involved.

Charges for Unit Trusts
There will usuabble be a sales charge for most funds...If you read the papers, they will always quote 2 figures..You will always be buying the most expensive and selling at the cheaper price..This difference is the sales charge or the spread..Usually quoted at 5%..However with internet Fund House these days, the sales charge will be lower at around 2%.

There are funds that have only one quote price (e.g Franklin Templetion).
To clarify earlier post whereby i mentioned Franklin Templetion funds have only 1 price instead of 2. This is because the sales charges is already deducted from your investment before they allocate the units to you. Other funds will only deduct the sale charges when you want to sell the units in your holding. Hence the need for 2 prices.

Types of Unit Trusts
There are a few categories the funds are invested in. This is also known as market.

1)Asset allocation-Shares/equities or Bonds or Foreign exchange (Money market) etc.

Depending on your risk appetite, choose the type of asset that suits you...Equities is the highest risk type while money markets is a totally different type of risk ...However, with higher interest rates causing bonds to yield fewer returns nowdays, money pumped into shares will be better. Will confirm again...

2)Geographical allocation-This can be single country eg.China, India, etc or regional (eg. Asia, Europe) or global.

3)Sectoral allocation- Refers to the Biz type-Popular sectors include Technology, Healthcare,Finance..

When deciding which fund to invest in...Consider all 3 factors...For example, if you believe in equities, Asia, Tech...Look for a fund invested into this area.

Point to note, the more specific a fund is invested in, the higher risk it is involved... eg. a Global Balanced Fund will spread out your risks..

Sianz, army committments just get more and more with time.

Points to note for driving today before i forget.

1. Gear control isn't too good, will occasionally slip in the change between gear 3 and 2. Must sweep left hard to make sure it is gear 2.

2. Moving off from gear 1, make sure left leg is at half-clutch/biting point and step accelerator a little will do. Common mistake is that the biting point is not reached, so the car takes a longer time to move off. This is important especially on slope, as the car needs to move straight away once biting point is reached, if not will roll back. Another mistake is too much pressure on accelerator applied sometimes, so car surge forward.

3. Always step on brake a little if the car is going to fast. And make sure heel does not touch ground when brake is stepped.

4. Have a tendency to park too far alway from the left kerb.

5. Change to neutral gear only if the car has stopped fully. Must step on brake if parking brake is not engaged to prevent rolling.

6. Always make sure to check right before exiting minor road and joining major road. And always use gear 2 when entering zebra crossing.

7. Rear mirror must be adjusted correctly so that the three lanes and the left kerb can be seen.

8. When stopping, brake gradually and when the car is about to stop, clutch in and brake at the same time to fully stop. Brake gradually to prevent sudden stop.

9. For gear 2, always rest at half-clutch before releasing clutch to prevent sudden speed surge and noise pollution.

Unit trusts- part 2

As spoken on unit trust part 1, the performance of the unit trust depends on the fund manager and the market the funds are invested in. Since the monies we pooled in are controlled and managed by the fund manager, it is essential to research on the manager. Generally, researching the managers has now been a rather difficult exercise due to little advertising and coordinated pool of information. Therefore, one must draw to his or her own conclusion whether the fund managers are capable or not.

With regards to market, it is essential to research on the underlying market that the unit trusts invest in. Unit trusts are often categorised into groups that best reflect what they invest in. Generally, the more "unfashionable" a market has been, the more you should feel comfortable relaxing in it. A fashionable can also mean an unstable market and one will see a lot of sellers as investors try to reduce their overweight position. However, for a unfashionable market, most investors will have a low weightage in it and therefore try to buy in order to restore their weightage.

Buying unit trusts
There are two prices quoted for a unit trust and the higher price is known as the "offer" price. The lower price is called the "bid"price. So when a price is quoted like $1.70-$1.60, one will know that the units were on sale for $1.70 and could be redeemd at $1.60. The difference is known as the "spread", which is usually around 5%.

One must know that there are exceptions to this. For example,Templeton unit trust quote only one price., This actaully means the bid price they are prepared to buy back the units. When you buy, they will deduct from the investment the amount of sale charges and the rest is invested at the net asset value price. The effect on the price you pay is the same, but it saves calculating and publishing two prices.

I think i will take a break for now and look at another kind of financial instrument in my next entry.

Unit trusts- part 1

I figure that i will start posting financial stuff which has always been my area of interest. Through this, i hope to consolidate whatever i have learnt and share these info with my readers(if there is any in the 1st place). Should there by any absurd rubbish or wrong information posted, do pardon me as i am also learning with you. Lastly, Whatever i posted here is based on my personal opinions and so do not be surprised by my rather subjective views. Without further delay, let's begin!

The wrong mentality with most people is that when they think of investments, they only think of shares and real estates properties. In fact, there are many areas to look at when one is investing. Although shares is a hot favour, i will not blog on this today. Instead, i will touch on unit trusts, which is quite an interesting area for investors. FYI, a lot of info is obtained from books and websites. Therefore,i have to rephrase it in my own simple words in order not to risk copyright infringement.

What is Unit Trust?

A unit trust is a large portfolio of securities (that is equities / shares, bonds and other financial instruments) managed by a fund manager, which is subdivided into "units". It is normally designed for household savings.

How does it work?

Basically, you fill in a simple application form stating that you want to buy a particular unit trust. Your money will be credited into the account of the fund manager a few days later after purchasing. Most unit trusts require a minimun lump sum eg. $1000. In return, you get a number of "units". These units are proportionate to the money you invest in. Normally, you will get a confirmation which will tell you how many units you have bought and at what price. Note that your subscription forms just part of the cash holding of the unit trust's portfolio since you aren't the only guy investing! The fund manager will invest the the total cash holdings in secuities he deem fit in order to reap returns. Working with the manager is the trustee who holds legal responsibility for the running of the unit trusts. Therefore, how good a unit trust performs depends on i.)your manager and ii)the market the unit trust invest in. If the performance is good, your units will be highly valued and you can redeem it for a sizeable amount of cash.

When can i sell it?

You can sell your unit trust at any time by asking your fund manager who will sell the units for you. You will receive the proceed into your bank account most likely in 1 week.

I am tired now and got to sleep early because there is duty tomorrow. I will touch on why the fund manager and market matters so much in the performance of unit trust in my next entry. Here is a sample of a unit share site taken from poems( philips securities brokerage firm) More info on broking houses next time! http://www.poems.sg/FinancialServices/unitTrusts.asp

Glossary

i.Equity is simply share. Some people like to use equity as a financial jargon for share just to appear chim and that's what i think. It means a part of a company's capital which is owned by shareholders. Although i read in SGX site that equity shares means a special kind of shares in a market..maybe it does have a different meaning. But all i know now is that equity is share.

2.trustee-Trustee is a legal term that refers to a holder of property on behalf of a beneficiary. In this case, the trustee makes sure that the fund manager manages the securities sensibly on behalf of the beneficiary which is you.

3.Portfolio- Investor’s holding of securities of various types. The wise investment policy is to build up a balanced portfolio according to personal requirements.

4.Securities- A term used to refer to all shares, debentures, notes and bonds

Frens driving frenzy

Lately, my friends have been scrambling to get their hands on the much coveted driving licence. Not surprising, some of them already possessed it and are now eligible to cruise on public roads. I forsee that in the near future, there will be even more friends signing up for driving course as getting a licence is the 1st step to owning a car in their never ending 5 Cs chase. This is indeed a contrary to the past, whereby only the well to do can afford a car due to the high tax payment. Now, as singaporeans become increasingly affluent, educated and materialistic, owning a car is considered a normal and easy thing to do. Everyone in the rat race wants it.

Our dear Gahmen is not blind to this problem. They are not oblivious to the amount of cars currently present on the roads, and they just keep growing and growing. Road hogging, jams and accidents are more prevalent then ever before. Now, a trip along PIE to your destination will be more time consuming since there will be a jam on the expressway every now and then. The Gahmen has been trying to curb this problem recently by introducing more ERP gantries and capping the amount of cars that can be sold every year. Although it did help in some extent, i still believe that more and more drivers will hit the road each year, and massive crowding will inevitably arise.

Common, they always tell us to use public tranport by giving excuses like the oil shortage crisis, or that the process is cost efficient and we are doing a bid for the environment. Try telling that to a scholar or a financial hot shot to take public means and most probably they will shun you away because they are NOT going to give up their pursuit on a car. To them, a branded car symbolises elitism, power and superiority. "So what if you own a lancers, i gonna own a jaguar" is their only way of thinking sadly.

So would there be massive traffic congestion in the near future? The answer is quite obvious. Maybe the opening of the new KPE will alleviate the problem a little. But unless there is a world crisis like a sudden exhaustion of oil resources, the problem is here to stay.

I know i have been babbling on and on. This is a very random and probably my longest blog entry. It all arises because of a ride my friend gave me in his newly rented car. He had just received his licence weeks ago. My two other friends and myself in the car were admiring at his ability to control the steering wheel. To me, driving is a symbol of adulthood. Otherwise, i am still a kid if you know what i mean, a kid who is been driven around by an adult who is in actual reality my friend. That is why i am going to lay my hands on the licence no matter what. My two other friends are going to pick up driving as well due to influence.

It has just become another cheese for us rats to chase.

Just do it

It just came as a complete revelation. I have finally perfected a skill to empower people and get them motivated . Thanks to the insights gained from a friend's birthday party.

We always encounter difficulties whereby one has troubles getting people to attend outings because many of them won't give an answer and will just back out at the last min even if they have agreed to come.

Well, if your friend is unethusiatic or hesitant about attending gatherings or functions, try sending a very CUTE SMS imploring them to come. Dabbles with fonts, colours, whatever to make it interesting. Contents of the message as followed.

Friend, what you thinking? Don't think so much. Just comeeeeeeeeeeeee!:))))

You would be surprised at the effect of this message. Chances are that they will attend the event or functions. Cheers! This message can also be adjusted to suit the needs in different contexts. For example, you want to invite a friend along for running but he seems quite reluctant and undecisive. Tell him that he is thinking too much and ask him not to ponder, just run. You will see him saying okay to you in double quick time. Lolx

Oh yea, recently indulged in a reading spree in camp due to the sudden outburst of free time from being an admin clerk. Read like tons of books already. The only bad thing is that my camp forbids psp so i can't really play. Well, reading is a good thing to make the time pass by, although the activity is really passive i must say. My friend used to ask me how i managed to concentrate amid the noises and stares by superiors in the office. My answer to him is quite expected.

Don't think so much. Just read. :)

Obsession with a song can sometimes do wonder to your soul or spirit. My ears are glued to this song for days already and still not sick of it.

Sorry to disappoint if you reckon this would be another piece from artistes like JJ or Jay chow.

你身上有她的香水味;

Up pes to escape tyranny?

Recently one of my army friend made a remarkable move and set an example for all Singapore sons to follow by upping his pes status from C to A.

For all those who are unclear of pes status, pes status determine your suitability for vocations in the SAF, with the fittest being graded A and the problematic ones being graded C or E, depending on how serious your medical conditions are.

Many people will therefore try to downgrade to pes C or E so that they can go into slack vocations which are often not demanding.

Upgrade is quite rare and virtually unheard of.

Apparently, this poor friend of mine was initially granted pes c and was given a role as an admin or clerk assitant. However, he confounded in me that work pressure in admin was so great that he would rather pick a rifle and fight in the front line then being arrowed by superiors to do clerical saikang. I was appalled.

Moral of the story is that life is camp is so f*** up no matter where you go.

261 days to ORD!

Must strive for ROD! No reservist. :)))

Would you last?

A morbid grim title i have for this entry. Can't help it because i have seen how vulnerable lives really are. Recently on the local news were the deaths of two poly students in a car crash and a 19 year old army boy in a fatal motorbike accident. A pity.

Life can be fragile. Treasure time and your loved ones always.

Be aware every morning that you may not last the day,
And every evening that you may not last the night.

Depression is a pestilence

I would say that the few hours prior to the booking in timing every Sunday are the least meaningful and unproductive. It is during this time that most army personnel will just lock themselves in their room, fixing their eyes on their computer, rotting to...book in. Face it, the options ain't many when the poor army guy is required to book in at 10pm or 11pm and the clock reads a pathetic 7pm. So here i am now rotting my time away and blogging in front of the computer, unable to attend any gathering due to lack of time, just waiting to book in. Sigh.

This can be classified as a case of depression i think. Because it will just get
worse. The last 15 min to booking in is what i call the "blackout timing" because your mind is in a blank, oblivious to the happenings around you. Wait a min, how can there be "happenings" when you are confined in your own room? You have just switched off the damn computer, wore your damn polo t-shirt when you suddenly awe in utter amazement to find out that you have another 7 min to go before you step out of your door and venture to hell. 7 min... shit! And you immediately blame yourself for the stupidity of switching your com at such a early time. With nothing else to do, you just slump yourself flat on the bed and use the time left to stare at the ceiling...... What i just did is to echo the sentiments felt by many army people prior to booking in.

Sux. i am off to hell now.

Exasperation

People are a bunch of funny things. They tend to have a second look at aberrations. Likewise for me, i tend to think that clubbers are interesting people, because i cannot understand the fun of clubbing. I guess that when one finds some element that is different, one will tend to notice it and will want to find out more. In the case of my scarred finger, i have begun to attract stares here and there. Coversely, if clubbers find conservative people like me reading a book, or using my free time to play boardgames like SCRABBLES instead of grooving high to some disco music. I would probably be their center of attention because i am against the "norm" to them. They might think i am a weirdo or something...hmmm...

Well, the point that i want to bring across is that cliques are formed based on this societal differences because birds of the same feathers flock together. In my army circle of friends, buddies of old times have moved on to forming new cliques and relationships have soured over times. It was because differences exist between me and my buddies. Many of my army friends are english speaking, love clubbing, love to sing english songs and the night life which i don't really have a passion for it. Although i can't say i don't, but theirs is a bit too frequent and extreme for me. Naturally, i find myself being an outcast and have moved on to joining new cliques. I also find myself speaking less and less to my buddies of old times, and will feel a tinge of sadness whenever they go clubbing and i don't get invited. I understand that it is my fault that my personality don't match theirs and i ain't really their good old buddy anymore, although i did was in the past... I do feel neglected sometimes, but i can't force myself to conform, otherwise i wouldn't be myself anymore.

I just wish i will fit in once again.

Something lurking in the mist!

Caught the movie The Mist recently which is a adaptation of the novella by horror author Stephen King. It is about a group of people being trapped in a supermarket by an outerworldly mist. Mayhem ensues when they realise that there are strange beings lurking in the mist which seek to eviscerate anyone who dares to venture outside. The group of people needs to pull themselves together in order to survive. One thing interesting about the movie is that it brings out the darkest nature of human behaviour in times of adversity as the protagonist not only have to fend off aliens, but also have to grapple with the people within the confined supermarket to prevent them from doing stupid things that would endanger everyone's lives. Highly recommended movie to all. The ending was also too unexpected that i walked out of the cinema feeling dazed and falling into a state of comatose.

This movie inspired me to read the book and i found that The Mist is actually found in the book Skeleton Crew which is an anthology of many short horror stories. Managed to borrow it at my nearby library. :) There is also a official movie book written by stephen king himself for this movie.

Class gathering!

Recently attended 2 class outings last week! Due to the fact that i am tired now, i won't describe much about the events. Anyway, i was really glad to see so many of my old friends because the turn up rate was good! Wish there would be more gatherings in the near future! Some photos for my memory. :)) One more thing, my army life had being really busyyyyyyyy....so much admin stuff to do, store stuff to settle, items to be returned , indentations of items, unit rations forecast...Although my job scope is different now, it is still tough. Who says admin and store is slack in the 1st place? So much to do, so little time..
